Ernest Hemingway, pilnas vardas Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899 - 1961), amerikiečių romanistas bei novelistas, mums puikiai pažįstamas iš tokių kūrinių kaip "Kam skambina varpai" ar "Senis ir jūra", už kurį buvo apdovanotas Nobelio literatūros premija.

Tik pabaigęs vidurinę įsidarbino laikraštyje "Star" (Kanzas Sityje) ir tapo tikrai puikiu žurnalistu. Vėliau, karas įsiveržė į Ernest'o gyvenimą: vos būdamas devyniolikos įstojo į Raudonojo kryžiaus sanitarinį būrį. Vėliau, dalyvavo Ispanijos pilietiniame kare, po kurio parašė vieną geriausių savo romanų "Kam skambina varpai", taip pat buvo ir Pirmojo pasaulinio karo dalyvis.

Vienareikšmiškai, karas įtakojo rašytojo kūrybą, jis nemėgo tuščiažodžiavimo, vertino potekstę, gilinosi į žmogaus vidinį pasaulį, jausmus. Visuose kūriniuose atsispindi mirties, netekties tema. E. Hemingway labai daug reikalavo iš savęs, jis manė, kad raštojas turi atiduoti tai, ką savyje turi geriausio. Praėjus septyneriems metams po Nobelio premijos gavimo rašytojas dėl pašlijusios sveikatos bei depresijos nusprendė palikti šį pasaulį.
