This is a story of white poverty in South Africa. Poor whites were seen as a "shame" on the white race as well as a threat to their dominance. As South Africa grew in prosperity, it became more urgent to find a solution to this problem. Through initiatives like work creation, the physical seperation of races and education, structural apartheid came into being and the poor white problem was put to rest. Or so the ruling powers wanted everybody to believe.
Now, many decades after Alfred Francis, the phenomenon of the "poor white" is crawling out of the woodwork. But South Africa is now dealing with structural poverty that transcends race. Poor White is the story of what it means to be white - imagined or real. It is the story of the creation of the Afrikaner.
