From the Neumark, from Bohemia, from Galicia, from the Danube, from Transylvania and from different regions of the Russian Empire came a large number of emigrants who, at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, sought a better life overseas. In order to escape poverty, unemployment, land shortages, religious or political persecution in their homeland, many German-speaking inhabitants of these areas also set out to America, Australia, New Zealand, South America and Canada.
