Elizabeth is their doting mother, and submissive wife to Edward, who is a controlling, surly drunk, and a poor excuse for a husband and father. There is celebration in the household while Edward is away in a mental institution, suffering from a nervous breakdown. Happiness abounds, and Elizabeth becomes more independent and self-assured during Edward's absence. But there is shock and sorrow when the happiness abruptly ends with a devastating tragedy.
