Novel is set in the south in 1940s & 1950s - It's the story of Jimmy, a young music prodigy, who first plays piano for an audience at age five and receives a standing ovation. He’s also psychic, can foresee the future, and sometimes can see dead people. His unusual gifts must be kept secret because of the superstition of many; fear of the strange or purportedly supernatural. Jimmy has a younger sister, Becca, who is adorable, but has no special gifts or talent. Elizabeth is their doting mother, and submissive wife to Edward, who is a controlling, surly drunk, and a poor excuse for a husband and father. There is celebration in the household while Edward is away in a mental institution, suffering from a nervous breakdown. Happiness abounds, and Elizabeth becomes more independent and self-assured during Edward's absence. But there is shock and sorrow when the happiness abruptly ends with a devastating tragedy.
