In order to be able to escape from the modern conditioning, which would have us assume that modernity or some development of it is feasible as a final state of mature human life, we must have a notion of somewhere better to which we might escape. The journey to what I call world-community passes through our inward, liberated human nature before it discovers world-being. Just as modernity has for two millennia been the refusal to countenance achieved human-natural liberty as an established fact, so can we now understand world community as arising out of an acceptance of that liberty, and this allows us in turn to evolve, ultimately to have eternal life in world that is mystery and sacrament.
