Martin was born in Liverpool but has spent forty years living in South Cumbria with easy access to the quiet parts of the Lakes where he has been able to indulge his love of hill-walking, rock-climbing, cycling and kayaking. He has worked as a language teacher in Cumbria and the Highlands and as a mountain guide in Britain, Spain, France and Morocco.

Martin's poems have been performed at venues including Keswick's Theatre by the Lake and included in anthologies of current poetry.
