In the course of donating bone marrow and trying to help the boy survive, he develops cancer himself. However, his body turns the deadly cancer cells into a mutation that fights sickness and regenerates dying tissue, and, after nearly dying, he comes back stronger than ever, eventually marrying his high school sweetheart and fathering a child of his own.
