ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR
Villette was the fourth of four novels written by Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) and was originally published in 1853 under her pen name Currer Bell. It is an autobiographical fiction novel based upon her own experiences in England and Belgium.
Lucy Snowe, a young Englishwoman, narrates the trials, losses and struggles of her life in the English countryside and in the town of Villette in the fictional kingdom of Labassecour.
Charlotte Brontë had four published novels: Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1849), Villette (1853) and The Professor (1857). Charlotte Brontë and two of her sisters, Anne Brontë and Emily Brontë, jointly wrote a book of poems which was originally published in 1846 under their pen names Currer, Acton and Ellis Bell.
