Description
The underground music scene in Belgrade has not previously received the intellectual attention it deserves. This book adopts new multidisciplinary approaches, articulating political economy, discourse analysis, semiotics and extensive ethnographic fieldwork. This work explores the complex unity of historical, discursive and aesthetic factors within the scene, and the way in which these define the economic and organisational aspects of its development. Many musicians, artists and entrepreneurs have left their mark. Some have disappeared; many are forgotten, but their actions within the unique conditions facing culture production in Belgrade in the late 20th Century have left a visible legacy. Articulations of authenticity of individual musical projects are based on major ethical and aesthetic components which make these projects unique. This book raises ethical and methodological questions concerning culture-production and cross-cultural communication that influence a number of related disciplines, applicable beyond the context of Belgrade.
