Her speciality was writing books about children, both for and about. Montgomery was unique in that she stressed the power and goodness of children, not just to her audience of children, but adults as well. Her most popular work was Misunderstood, published in 1869. It was considered an influence to Lewis Carroll and Vladimir Nabokov. She also wrote a great deal of children's stories, including A Very Simple Story (1866), her first. Montgomery died at the age of 80, from breast cancer. She lived her whole life in her family's estate, along with her sisters.
