Description
This volume contains two classics of Gothic literature: Horace Walpole's "The Castle of Otranto" and Clara Reeve's "The Old English Baron". "The Castle of Otranto" is a 1764 novel by Horace Walpole and is generally considered to be the first Gothic novel. The story shaped modern-day Gothic books, films, art, and music, beginning a literary genre that would become incredibly popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. "The Old English Baron" is an early Gothic novel first published in 1778. Reeve presented the story, similarly to Walpole, as an old manuscript that she had found and then transcribed. According to The Oxford World's Classics edition notes, it had a significant influence in the development of Gothic fiction. These two Gothic tales constitute must-reads for fans of Gothic literature and would make for perfect introductions to the genre. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.
