"The Castle of Otranto" is a 1764 novel by Horace Walpole and is generally considered to be the first Gothic novel. "The Old English Baron" is an early Gothic novel first published in 1778. Reeve presented the story, similarly to Walpole, as an old manuscript that she had found and then transcribed.
