This book ranges widely, and rather diffusely, over many areas of Christian thought, trying to suggest that there is a way of using a small and very limited set of theological tools with which to do our thinking and our living today. We have chosen a certain way of standing in the midst of our culture, and for this reason some valuable parts of the Christian tradition have been hidden, and even ignored. But perhaps some other parts of that tradition have become more precious or more visible than before. The "essence" we have ended up with is something less than a fully confident Christian perspective from which to launch an all-out attack on a godless world. But it involves enough for us to get on with, and it gives us a style of life permitting us not only to understand and suffer with this world, but actually to enjoy it.
