Description
Returning home at 2 a.m., Dr. Hextall is summoned to an accidental shooting in a nearby house. He arrives to find a beautiful woman holding a revolver on a group of men over a dispute during a card game. When one of the man had tried to disarm her, the gun went off into the woman's arm. Upon arrival, Dr. Hextall diffuses the situation so he can see to his patient. The woman, Paquita Tress believed the other men were cheating, swindeling her brother, Darrell, out of his money. The men leave, returning their winnings, and Dr. Hextall remands Paquita to her family's estate at Lynne Court where she can rest and recover from her wound.
When one of the men from the card game is found murdered on the grounds of the Tress estate, suspicion falls on Paquita, and Dr. Hextall enlists the aid of his lawyer friend, John Smith, and his assistant Styler to uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder and hopefully clear Paquita's name.
J. S. Fletcher has crafted a masterpiece of the mystery genre where nothing is as obvious as it seems, and twists and turns abound. The Mystery of Lynne Court was originally published in 1916 as Lynne Court Spinney in the UK, then renamed for its US release in 1923.
