1878. The present volume is an abridgment of the "Life of Mahomet" published in four volumes in 1861. The introductory chapters on the pre-Islamite history of Arabia, and most of the notes, with all the references to original authorities, have been omitted. The text, though here and there slightly enlarged, and throughout amended, is in both editions substantially the same. It the reader should wish to verify the authority for any particular statement, he may consult the references which have been freely given in the larger edition.
