But his life was so essentially one of work, that a history of the man could not be written without following closely the career of the author. Thus it comes about that the chief part of the book falls into chapters whose titles correspond to the names of his books. The letters dating from his early years at Edinburgh University to the publication of The Origin of the Species in 1859, they chart the most exciting years of Darwin's life, including the voyage of the Beagle and the subsequent findings that led to his theory of natural selection.
