He was also a contributor to the Atlantic Monthly (which he named), penning the famous series of Breakfast-table sketches, which are imaginary conversations at a Boston boardinghouse and reflective of Holmes's opinions, charm, and wit. Among his other notable works are three novels presenting a scientific approach to psychological traits, most notably Elsie Venner, this volume The Guardian Angel and A Moral Antipathy. The Guardian Angel is a novelistic examination of how inherited bodily aspects or habitudes determine character from generation to generation.
