Description
The old abandoned house across Gibson Road had always been a place that harbored darkness. Donna Jean McGuire knew, with all the certainty of her fourteen-year-old heart, that evil would someday come rising out of the dilapidated ruin. People moved and out of the old house, but they never stayed long.
Finally, another family moved in. They were standoffish, making no effort to get to know the McGuires or anyone else. But when Donna Jean saw a three-year-old boy pushing a broken down baby stroller--complete with a baby in it--onto Gibson Road, she knew she had to do something. Gathering up the children, she took them to the old house and knocked on the front door. A woman came to the door, took the children inside, and told Donna Jean to leave them alone. Then the door slammed shut.
Donna Jean stumbled back into the yard, stunned by the woman's rudeness. Her gaze darted around, looking for something, anything, familiar or reassuring. What she saw instead was a body in the trees nearby, hanging from a tree limb with a rope knotted around its neck. That was when Donna Jean ran.
