Description
Copy editor Clement Cleggett inherits $500,000 and decides to follow his lifelong dream of pursuing pirates on the China Sea. He purchases a broken-down wreck of a boat half-buried in a Long Island riverbank, hires a local loafer "from a seafaring family" as skipper, and begins refurbishing the craft for its, and his, new life. But a group of men across the river are not pleased that Cleggett has acquired the Jasper B and begin urging him to leave with gunshots and dynamite bombs. The situation is further confused by the arrival of an English aristocrat and her luggage: the ice-packed body of a man who had been stalking her. A defrocked minister appears, and a preserves-obsessed old maid, and three shape-shifting private detectives. However much adventure Clement Claggett expected to find on the open sea, he has to admit that New York has almost as much to offer.
