Description

In 1969, the last vestiges of EC's horror comics resided in the black and white magazines Creepy and Eerie, but a new, feisty competitor to the Warren magazines emerged in that year: Web of Horror. Pluckily published by a small, independent, slightly amateurish publisher who gave the young artists who filled its pages their heads, Web of Horror was a diamond in the rough, waiting to be discovered by fans of black-and-white horror comics. What greeted those who ventured into its pages were instant classics of horror and science fiction by such rising stars of comic art as Bernie Wrightson, Michael Kaluta, Bruce Jones, Ralph Reese, Frank Brunner, Roger Brand, and Wayne Howard, as well as seasoned veterans such as Syd Shores and Norman Nodel, illustrating stories written by Otto Binder, Nicola Cuti, and others.

Web of Horror was a flame that burned brightly and was just as quickly, and mysteriously, extinguished. Nearly 55 years later, The Complete Web of Horror has been compiled, with the cooperation of the artists (and their estates), into a single, lovingly edited and designed volume.

The Complete Web of Horror does not merely collect all three published issues; editor Dana Marie Andra has pulled out all the stops and included all the stories by Stephen Hickman, Tom Sutton, Len Wein, Gerry Conway, and others intended for following issues issues and which were subsequently published only in obscurity in the 1970s. It also includes six never-before published stories drawn for Web of Horror, long thought to be lost and recently unearthed. Among these lost stories is Wrightson's "The Monster Jar," lovingly restored by Frederic Manzano (Woodwork: Wallace Wood 1927-1981).

This very complete volume also features historical and contextual essays, such as the Foreword by original Web of Horror editor and science fiction novelist Terry Bisson; an account of the magazine's origin by the late Clark Dimond; the history of the magazine's rise and baffling demise by collection editor Andra; reminiscences by fanzine publishers Robert Lewis (Scream Door) and Robert Gerson (Reality); and an Afterword by Richard J. Arndt (Horror Comics in Black and White: A History and Catalog).
