The main difficulty for students who begin research work upon early colonial history is the confusion into which the records have fallen through various rearrangements. Though the final arrangement of the documents at the Public Record Office has made it a simple matter to obtain the particular document whose precis has been consulted in the calendar, yet the present logical arrangement takes no notice of the previous history of the various documents, for it is geographical. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
