Description
Mining engineer Fergus Derrick arrives in the village of Riggan full of optimism about improving the lot of the local colliers. But the mine owners are focused on the bottom line. The villagers are poor, dirty, and illiterate and distrust strangers; most scoff at religion, thinking the local minister too officious and his curate too weak. Only young Joan Lowrie fits Derrick's notion of the strong and resilient Lancastrian, and she is likely to show up at work bearing the marks of her father's fists. But Riggan will improve little by little over time thanks to the good work of Derrick, Joan, the curate, and Anice, the minister's highly capable daughter.
