Following a battle, confederate soldiers burn down Isaiah's blacksmith shop and his adjoining home, leaving him with nothing. He meets General George Armstrong Custer, who inspires him to go out West and work for the railroad. Isaiah is hired on as a hunter for the railroad by Pierre le Fur, who leads the hunting party. Having had differences with the railroad boss, Lars, Isaiah is receptive when Pierre and his wife talk him into leaving the railroad and heading with them to Montana Territory to search for gold. Isaiah meets up again with General Custer, who persuades him to join his 7th Cavalry as an interpreter, just as the troop heads for the Dakotas and a date with destiny. O.C. Jenkins is retired, lives in Silver City, New Mexico, and is writing his next novel, The Madonna and the Samurai. "I have always been interested in the Battle of the Little Big Horn and of General George Armstrong Custer. In my research, I came across a man called Isaiah Dorman who was the only African American to fight with the 7th cavalry at the battle of the Little Big Horn. After extensive research, I decided to write about this unique and unusual man." Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/OCJenkins
