INTRODUCTION Commerce education began in India as early as 1886 when the first commercial school was set up in Madras by the Trustees of Pachiappa's charities. The Madras Government instituted examinations in Commerce at about the same time. The Government of India started a school of Commerce in Calicut (Kerala) in 1895. In 1903, Commerce classes were started at the Presidency College, Calcutta. Between 1903 and 1912, Commercial institutions were also started in Bombay and Delhi with facilities for training in typewriting, shorthand correspondence, and business methods. Commerce education at the University level began with the establishment of the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Bombay in 1913. In the subsequent years, there had been growing recognition of the need for the expansion of Commerce education in the country. To quote Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (1915): "The importance of Commercial education that is, a special growing for the young men who intend to devote themselves to commercial pursuits as a factor in national and international progress is now fully recognized. Professor Lessly Smith addressing the Indian Industrial Conference at Madras said: "TJie leaders of Commerce and Business need to be scientifically trained just as a doctor or a barrister or professional man is".
