The stories in this volume are translated from the 17th Century collection called the Laio-Chai Chi-i of P'u Sung-Ling, a collection of weird tales which include stories of magic, devilry, vampirism and other fantastic themes. Giles was professor of Chinese at Cambridge as well as British Consul at Ningpo.
