Description

Originally published in 1811, Sense and Sensibility is a classic romance novel by Jane Austen. It tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, both of age to marry.

Set within the 1700's of Devonshire and London, the story revolves around the lives of two sisters whose approaches to life differ. The older, Elinor Dashwood, is a genteel young woman whose emotions are controlled by her reason. The other, Marianne Dashwood, is a spirited young woman whose emotions are given their full expression.

Played out against the sexist oppression of an English culture which does not allow women to inherit or practice a profession, we walk with Elinor and Marianne through their season of coming of age. Their problems and joys are many. Having a father who passes away, their half-brother inherits the vast wealth of the estate and, through the manipulative greed of his wife, leaves his half sisters and step-mother virtually destitute.
Elinor is the first to fall in love. Her heart is stolen by a disarmingly caring Edward Ferris. A man of deep conviction and spiritual sensitivity, Edward is painfully proper. Due in part to such reserve, but equally due to the controlled emotions of Elinor, their feelings for one another are suppressed. - CinemaInFocus
