Alexandre Dumas (24 July 1802 - 5 December 1870) was one of the most prolific and popular French writers of the nineteenth century. He is best known for his historical novels of high adventure. Although he never quite succeeded in attaining literary eminence, Dumas was extremely successful first as a playwright and then as a novelist. Some of his most celebrated works, including The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, were written in collaboration with Auguste Maquet. Such was the popularity of his novels that they have been translated into nearly a hundred languages. This collection features some of his best-loved short stories such as 'A Bal Maque', 'The Cenci' and 'The Countess De Saint-Geran'.
