Each one of these is hauntingly eloquent and highlights the effectiveness of a memorial in focusing society's consciousness on important issues. The case studies are interspersed with interviews with the designers. The book begins with an exploration by the authors of alternative ways of interpreting memorials, such as concepts of permanence, loss, abstraction, physical experiences, and memory. The book also considers some of the functions of memorials, common themes addressed by the works, and practical considerations facing architects.
