This volume contains the most important theoretical and methodological papers of Gabriel Altmann (1929-2019). He is the founder of a specific school of quantitative linguistics, focused on the statistical analysis and mutual interrelations of linguistic characteristics and features. His approach concentrates on the building of a general theory of linguistics. The theory is based on the relevance of linguistic laws (Zipf's, Menzerath's and Piotrowski) and concepts of language as a self-regulated system. In contrast, to approaches, where quantitative are used as a standard methodological tool, Altmann favours a "holistic" and epistemological view on problems of the quantification of linguistic and text phenomena.
