Description
In this story set in the 1870s, 12-year-old Arthur Dale Dustin is living a fairy-tale existence—of the Cinderella variety. An orphan, he has been farmed out to relatives who resent and mistreat him. His only friends are a young girl cousin, an oil-well driller named Brace Barlow, and former slave Uncle Phin. A chance encounter with a beautiful stranger leaves Arthur in possession of a book of fairy tales. Soon, he and Uncle Phin start on the long journey from Western Pennsylvania to Virginia so that the boy can meet his grandfather. The book helps them through encounters with farm families, tramps, and hard-boiled railroad men. But Arthur's adventures do not end when the pair reach Richmond, for Grandfather Dale is in dire need of money. The boy has one possession of value—a piece of Pennsylvania land left to him by his father. He, his grandfather, and Brace Barlow join forces to drill an oil well that may make their fortunes.
