About the Contributor(s): Joseph Palen was born in Springfield, Missouri, in 1935, has a BS from the University of Missouri, an MS from the University of Illinois, and a PhD from Lehigh University, all in chemical engineering. For forty-seven years he worked for the chemical process industries. He was married twice and has six children and eleven grandchildren. Palen is author of numerous published technical papers and industrial reports. This is his first nontechnical work.
