Gabe “Fireball” Nelson was a fantastic pitcher for Atlanta who not only won a Cy Young award, but when he retired from pitching he became their coach.
Gabe and his wife Heather had longed for a child and unfortunately were never able to have one but if you keep dreaming sometimes they do come true. This is one of the most wonderful, enjoyable and heartwarming stories I have ever read. Yes it contains mostly information on how baseball and how Gabe and his wife meet Tyler a young rather shy boy (who lost his dad two years ago) and his mom, Sarah when they move to Jackson a small town.
Gabe and Heather have had enough of baseball and figure they will now live a quiet life away from the media and press and continue there religious belief of always doing and helping others.
When Sarah and Tyler move into the neighbored Heather cannot wait to go over and welcome the new neighbors. Tyler is very shy and does not have any friends and is very attached to his mom.
Thru the love, guidance, friendship and faith they are able to get Tyler to come out of his shell and start to play baseball. At first Gabe does not tell him who he was and how famous he was. The friendship like a flower continues to grow and we see Heather helping Sarah by watching Tyler after school so she can make more money at her job to make ends meet.
Gabe is slowly introducing Tyler to baseball and he seems to really enjoy it. We see how Gabe and his wife sort of “adopt the two of them” and Gabe becomes like the father he lost and Sarah feels like Heather is her best friend and can talk to her about anything.
When Gabe was growing up his father gave him a list of rules on how to live your life and be a better person. When he feels the time is right he gives this list to Tyler and thru out there entire lives they will refer to many of these rules.
Here are just a few: rule # 3 “Always give people more than they expect, and do it cheerfully.” Rule # 6 “When you lose, don’t lose the lesson. A loss isn’t the end of the world. It is an experience to learn and grow to be better the next time you try” rule # 13 “Always be willing to help others because there will come a day when you will need help.
The list consisted of twenty rules and if you read them you will see how you can make yourself into a better person.
Gabe has helped Tyler thru his elementary school years, his junior high school years and now his college years to help him be the pitcher he wants to be. His dream is to be a professional just like Gabe and with the work, sacrifices and being a good person you can be anything you want to be.
This a remarkable story and you will be truly inspired not to ever give up on your dreams.
