Description

This is a memoir of my personal and professional experiences working with seniors and their families. As a social worker I've worked with individuals with both physical and cognitive impairments in both the community and various long-term care settings. Although lots of supports exist for primary caregivers, little time is geared towards helping children make sense of what is happening. Children are expected to go along with the process and their observations, fears, and anxieties are unintentionally ignored.

Parents often say they will explain everything later, as they try to maintain their own health and sanity in the midst of never ending caregiver duties.

Children are sometimes the first to recognize that things are not as they should be. This book was designed to shed light on why long-term care or home supports are needed when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia. It is a glimpse into what families may experience and one viable solution to keep their loved ones safe.

It is an effort to acknowledge that quality care facilities do exist and serve a purpose. It highlights the loving bond between a grandparent and child, while promoting the value and need for more intergenerational programs. We as a society have so much to learn from our elders. Cherish them when they are here. My wish is for all seniors to be happy and safe and most of all age with dignity and grace.

For everyone who has had a friend or family member diagnosed with dementia, and to all the health care professionals that provide compassionate care: you are not alone in this journey. With the appropriate help and supports we can ensure that our loved ones maintain their dignity and quality of life.

To my parents and my children: I commend you for you for your courage and strength. To all health care providers and my colleagues whom I've laughed and cried with: your empathy and daily efforts are above and beyond ministry standards. To my clients past and present: you inspire me and motivate me to keep going.
