Before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States merchant marine was a privately managed fleet of working ships, designated to carry cargo throughout the world. Men educated for this service at the United States Merchant Marine Academy were among the youngest to serve during the war. As the fighting intensified, their training was eventually compressed to sixteen months, six months of which was on-board training in the war zones.
Since 1990, numerous graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point have related their wartime stories in adudio and video recordings. This book collects 59 of those interviews, providing a firsthand perspective on World War II from a crucial participant in the Allied victory.
