A giant of 20th-century American poetry closely associated with the Beat Generation, especially Gary Snyder & Lew Welch, he was a participant in the legendary Sixth Gallery reading in San Francisco where Allen Ginsberg first read Howl. Produced by Dave Haselwood's Auerhahn Press, publisher of iconic Beat classic editions including The Exterminator by William S. Burroughs & Brion Gysin, issued the same year, 1960. A softcover original featuring a woodblock illustration by Robert LaVigne, also very closely associated with the original Beats.
