Description

This monograph is the result of the author's work on his PhD thesis on the political history of nineteenth-century America. The book examines the activities of Martin Van Buren and his role in the political struggle in the United States in the 1810s-1850s. The politician was one of the founders of the Democrat party and the architects of the second bipartisan system. While in office, Van Buren continued the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian democratic breakthroughs. At the same time, it is legitimate to speak of the dual nature of his activities. A radical in the fight against the financial oligarchy and an opponent of the slave-owning forces was combined in him with a supporter of compromise and the head of the centrist grouping in the Democratic Party. The book is intended for historians, political scientists, sociologists, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as for all those interested in American history and the development of modern society.
