Description

Developed for those in helping professions, and emphasizing a holistic approach, the anthology Managing Disturbed Behaviour raises awareness and enhances the skills needed to effectively manage the challenging behaviours of clients in a variety of settings and circumstances.

Readers learn exactly what disturbed behaviour is and how it can manifest in many forms and in diverse jurisdictions. They become familiar with the stages of a crisis, the importance of active listening to a person in crisis, and what constitutes an appropriate or inappropriate approach by a client to a helping professional. They explore various types of aggression and hostage-taking behaviour. They consider the situations and needs of those who engage in self-harm. They also cultivate their own self-awareness and gain valuable information about self-care for those in helping professions.

Featuring approaches and strategies that have successfully been implemented over the course of years, Managing Disturbed Behaviour is ideal for courses in nursing, corrections, and counseling. It is also an excellent choice for training programs offered in correctional institutions, to probation and parole officers, or in community settings.

Oliver Doyle, M.Ed. has taught at Fleming College in Canada for many years. He has specialized in developing courses in conflict management, the management of disturbed behaviour, negotiation skills, and violence in the workplace, and has taught to groups large and small throughout Canada and internationally. His consistent contribution to staff welfare, safety, and security was recognized by the National Crisis Prevention Institute of the United States with his recent inclusion in their Hall of Merit as a Meritorious Instructor, presently one of only 196 from about 31,000 worldwide. Professor Doyle is a co-author of Corrections in Canada and has co-authored two reports addressing life skills in corrections, and while under contract with Correctional Services of Canada he developed a Compendium of Education for Federal Correctional Officers.
