Description

Immediately after the Civil War ended, the Moses, Lela, and Solomon Freeman traveled southward from North Georgia to North Central Florida to establish their own homestead as freed people. The story that began in the Florida Historical Society award-winning Solomon, continues realistic depiction of the challenges of homesteading, family and community dynamics, and the special region of Florida so many people don't know. It's what many call the "real or forgotten Florida". In 1870, Solomon Freeman is only fourteen years old and already an old hand at the work and danger of the life of a homesteader in north Florida. He and his parents, Moses and Lela, have less than a year to go before earning the legal deed to their farm but they all know that nothing is guaranteed. Illness, injury, failed crops, animal and human attack, extreme weather, and the remaining political and social views of the Reconstruction Era are all very real threats. Just one of those threats could doom the success - even the survival -- of the Freeman family. With so much weight on his young shoulders, how is Solomon to navigate the ritual growing pains of a young manhood without destroying the people he loves the most?
