Interspersed in this plot are chapters featuring Erica's creative writing professor, Creighton Starke, who is reading Erica's manuscript Lowcountry Lamentations. The manuscript causes Creighton to second guess his reality and sheds further light into the childhood that brings Erica to the climactic familial showdown.
