On the other hand his hopes and endeavours for a decent education were never quite realised and in 1946, he left full time education when he received his call up papers and was recruited into the Royal Engineers. Two years in Germany, serving with the British Army of the Rhine ended with demob and return to civilian life - a world to which he didn't belong. He describes his efforts from 1949 searching for a career and finding a social life, resulting in his discovery of the girl to whom he was eventually married for 53 years. Now a widower with a career behind him, he describes his joy at being pater familias to an extended and close knit family.
