Description

In this monograph Dr Jared Runck offers a rhetorical-theological study of the Jeremiah's first two confessions (Jer. 11.18-23; 12.1-13) utilizing an affective perspective rooted in a Pentecostal hermeneutic. Combining insights gleaned from rhetorical, narrative, and reader-response interpretive methods, this study seeks to demonstrate how the initial confessions work as a kind of affective 'listening guide', working to tune the audience's ear to the emotive key of the Confessions and, more broadly, the entire book of Jeremiah. The work asserts the Confessions are integral to the overall theological message of the book, creating a space where the audience is invited to identify with and be transformed by the shared pathos of YHWH and prophet. This pioneering work appears to be the first in-depth Pentecostal interpretation of Jeremiah and is destined to become essential reading not only for Jeremiah studies but Pentecostal interpretation more broadly.
Jared Runck (DTh, University of South Africa) is Academic Dean and Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at Urshan College in Wentzville, MO.
