Hill in the struggle for control of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which later led to the stock market panic of May 9, 1901. His philanthropies included establishing a Semitic Museum at Harvard University, a chair for the study of German culture at Cornell, as well as various hospitals and schools of higher education.
