Halloween is one of those holidays which has its roots in history and tradition. From where did the custom of dressing up and going trick or treating originate? Well, the origin of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic peoples. They celebrated the dead ancestors' day and used to dress them in disguise. In order to make their costumes look authentic, they would decorate them with symbols representing the dead ancestors.

Halloween is such a popular holiday with people of every age and culture that you can find Halloween costumes in every store. Even though many people today associate Halloween with trick or treating, the true origins of the celebration can be traced back as far as 500 years in Ireland. The word Halloween comes from the Irish word 'Alla Eire' which means 'all together' or 'all for one'. This celebration is supposed to represent the reuniting with the family during the harvest season. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how Halloween is celebrated in Ireland, the customs and traditions associated with the festivities are as follows: On the evening of All Hallows' Day, a group of children dressed in costumes paraded around the neighborhood, calling out, 'Trick or treat, good boy or girl'. After this, houses were filled with pumpkins which were then broken open and candies were given to the children. Children would then take these treats to the nearest smelly dog, who would then give these treats to the child who got him or her a piece of candy. At nightfall, the celebration would come to an end and the celebration was called All Hallows Eve. In addition to being a religious holiday, Halloween is also a time for family and community gatherings. During All Hallows Eve, people would break out into song-and-dance competitions, join in parades, and display their finest clothes, which can include everything from fancy dresses to actual Irish costumes.
