The book is based on personal interviews, articles from the SMU Daily Campus, and 1947 SMU football game summaries from The Dallas Morning News. Additionally, SMU's DeGolyer Library provided source materials including archived photographs and articles. The inspiration for writing this book was the forty-six-year friendship between Williams and SMU's 1947 head cheerleader - Joe Redwine Patterson.
