Description

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.

Emma (1815) is Austen's fourth published novel and the last one published before her death. Of the title character, Emma Woodhouse, Austen famously said, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like." In this Austen was wrong. Emma is young, rich, something of a busybody, and definitely a snob-but at the same time wins readers over with her wit, charm, and devotion to her friends and family. Although light on plot, Emma is rich in characterization and remains one of Austen's best-loved novels.

This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).
