Description
Ecohydrology of Kerala: River Catchments and Coastal Backwaters presents 20 years of research to provide suggestions for sustainable management solutions for the issues surrounding the urbanization of the rivers of Kerala. Through the contributed chapters a fully comprehensive and foundational overview is provided of the rivers of Kerala, India to the readers, who can compare the status of the rivers of Kerala with those in the other volumes. This will help to identify the major issues and also develop management strategies. The main themes explored throughout the book are biogeochemistry of rivers/estuarine systems, productivity and trophic status, biology: fauna and flora, biodiversity, threats and conservation, invasive species and impact on riverine ecology, landscape/land use/land cover change in the catchment, socioeconomic status of catchment population, economic and livelihood activities along the river courses/estuaries (river and estuarine tourism, sand extraction, fisheries), pollution monitoring and assessment, impacts of climate change, dams and their implications on downstream productivity, ecosystem services and economic valuation, floods and management, coastal hazards, mitigation and management; all of which are important global themes. At present there is a lack of interaction between natural and social sciences which is required to address the intimately interwoven scientific, social and economic issues related to the management of river water resources in Kerala. Therefore, Ecohydrology of Kerala can be used as a tool in the holistic management of resources and to devise proper mitigation measures.
