Description

In this book, author Don Seymour traces the Corbett branch of his family back to the birth of Daniel Corbett in northern England in 1713 and his arrival in the American colonies in the 1740s. This compilation traces ten direct generations of that branch. Seymour chose to focus primarily (but not exclusively) on just one line of the descendants of Daniel Corbett, because of the availability of robust information available from family sources, historical treatises, online resources, and other books and publications. That available information permits an insightful view--through the lens of the chosen line of Daniel Corbett's descendants--into their lives and the times they lived in, from the settlement of agrarian Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and the Civil War to a glimpse of a remarkable Presbyterian minister to China and the migration of John Merrill Dixon and his bride, Mary Elmira Corbett, from the farms of Clarion County to industrial Pittsburgh. From their perspectives we experience the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the post-war generation of baby boomers. Certainly this compilation will be of interest to the current descendants of John and Mary Dixon, but it also offers a window on day to day life for anyone interested in American history.
