1887. The first period of The War of the Rebellion from its outbreak to the close of 1862. Illustrated. The author sees the conflict (Civil War) as being marked by three distinct periods. The first includes the conspiracy to bring about the disruption of the Union, withdrawal of the cotton-producing States, formation of the Confederacy, seizure of property belonging to the United States, bombardment of Fort Sumter, gathering of great armies; the period of enthusiasm, expectation, egotism, braggadocio, and ignorance in both sections; of mortification throughout the North and exultation in the South over the issue of the first great battle, followed in the North by the sober second thought and the rise of true patriotism. The second period includes the year 1863-the victories of Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and other battles. The third period includes the months from the appointment of Ulysses S. Grant commander-in-chief of the armies of the Union to the final breaking up of the Confederacy and the reestablishment of the authority of the United States.
