It is the 1960s, and two high school boys are headed in different directions. Terry is an athlete engrossed in himself and filled with anger toward his father, the mayor of St. Louis, who has little time for him or his two siblings. He goes after whatever he wants and knocks down anyone who gets in his way. Nick, a burgeoning Einstein, is timid and withdrawn and buries himself in his school work. Both of them are enchanted by the same girl, Lolly, a wallflower pianist and academic perfectionist who attracts the two boys like a warm bright candle that lures in unsuspecting moths. Their rivalry becomes even more complicated when another girl, Jennifer, comes into their lives. Jennifer, Lolly's best friend, is a dancer who seems destined to become an elite prima ballerina on the New York stage after she graduates from high school. The two girls are concerned about both boys' lack of faith and the directions that their lives may be taking them. Nick is convinced that there is no God, and Terry just doesn't have time for him. But despite of what appears to be an inevitable battle, the two boys are brought together when a series of unexpected events leads them to come face-to-face with God looking for answers in a world that has suddenly become overwhelming and possibly fatal for both of them.
