Description
Damn, Candy Man He Ain't All That I Lived Beneath The Candy Lady For Years! Is a series of poems about growing up as a young girl in one of Chicago's most notorious housing projects located in the heart of the Windy City Cabrini Green in the 70's and 80's. It is a book about family, community, relationships, triumph and survival. It is not about a Boogey Man running loose with a hook in hand. It is about the ups and downs of growing up young, gifted and black. There are no Boogey Men here there are resilient people in this book. It is about the entrepreneurial spirit of a people who were cast aside for decades. It has poems of love, self love, joy, pride, strength and heartache. It is about a young woman facing and conquering her fears by using her hands for writing and not fighting. Damn, Candy Man He Ain't All That I Lived Beneath The Candy Lady For Years! Is being adapted into a play that will be produced by Stage Left Theatre in Chicago.
