He holds a doctoral and a master's degree in geography from Kansas State University and a master's degree in communication science from Fort Hays State University, Kansas. In Trinidad, he has served as a high school teacher, an agricultural extension agent, and a corporate communications practitioner in the petroleum industry. In the United States he worked as a university professor in the field of geography and tourism. Coomansingh enjoys playing the cuatro, singing calypso, and writing poetry.
